West Side Trio?

2 Men Charged, 1 Sought In Plot To Ambush Cops

West Side Trio Were Planning To Retaliate For Earlier Incident With Cops
CHICAGO (STNG) ― Three men who were angry with Chicago Police allegedly had planned to ambush officers in Garfield Park, but then panicked and fled when police approached.

Two of the men--both carrying handguns--were arrested as they ran from the park late Friday, Chicago Police said Saturday.

One of them, Javar Shorty, 33, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder after he allegedly told investigators he had been paid to assist in shooting an officer, said Harrison Area Sgt. Joe Petrenko. Shorty also was charged with carrying a weapon as a convicted felon.

"There was going to be some type of ambush,'' Petrenko said.

The second man, Richard Jackson, 28, was charged with carrying a weapon as a convicted felon -- an offense carrying a minimum six-year prison term.

Investigators are still searching for a third man who ran from the park at about 11:20 p.m. Friday, although they recovered a pistol they believe he dropped or threw away as he ran, Petrenko said.

The men allegedly planned to shoot a police officer in retaliation for a previous confrontation in the neighborhood involving officers. Petrenko declined to disclose details of that earlier incident.

An organized plot to attack police is unusual, Petrenko said, adding, "It doesn't happen every day. It just proves it's a dangerous job.''
